Johann Heinrich Lambert (1728–1777)
was a German philosopher, physicist, astronomer, and mathematician who
wrote about
alethiology,
or the doctrine of truth, in his 1764 work Neues Organon. In
Alethiology,
Lambert focused on the nature and function of basic concepts that are
used to build logical propositions that are true. He also considered the
difference between truth, falsehood, and absurdity. To do this, Lambert
imagined an ideal realm where all truths are possible and all truth
values are distributed across all possible sentences. He then used
proofs to develop “formally constitutive rules” that make up this realm.
For example, he argued that all truths can cohere with each other, that
every falsehood contradicts a truth, and that each truth has something
that distinguishes it from all others. Lambert was a self-taught
polymath who influenced his fellow academics and public debate during
the Enlightenment era. He was also the first to prove that π is
irrational.
